Torugart Pass (3752 m) runs along the Kyrgyz-Chinese border and was once used by travelers on the Great Silk Road. The Bishkek-Torugart road has some narrow stretches and is often closed in the winter due to heavy snowfall. Prior to 2002, it was the only place where travelers could cross between China and Kyrgyzstan.

Torugart Pass

While Kyrgyz and Chinese citizens are allowed anywhere along the pass, citizens of all other countries are only allowed in the city of Urumqi.

On the Kyrgyz side of Torugart Pass, travelers can visit Lake Chatyr Kul, a beautiful alpine lake located at an elevation of 3,530 meters. Lake Chatyr Kul is Kyrgyzstan’s silk road highest alpine lake as well as its third largest.
