Tashkent - is a capital of Uzbekistan and a typical Soviet metropolis, the fourth most populous city in the CIS after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev. The population of Tashkent is about 2.5 million people, most of whom are Uzbek and Russian.
Only few blocks of the old city near Chorsu bazaar have survived after the year 1966, when Tashkent was almost completely destroyed by a powerful earthquake.
Nevertheless, here you can see a lot of beautiful mausoleums and madrassas, though most of them are restored buildings. In addition, Tashkent is an interesting amazing combination of religious buildings of several faiths, each of which is stunningly beautiful in itself, and is particularly impressive in contrast with neighboring. Thus here you can still see the magnificent Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and richly decorated with ceramic tiles and traditional ornaments Kukeldash Madrassah; Evangelical-Lutheran Church and Orthodox Cathedral. Uzbekistan is a Muslim country, so most of its inhabitants are Muslim.
Tashkent is located on the border of subtropical and temperate continental climate zones. This explains the hot weather in summer (average temperature of 26 ° C) and mild winters (average temperature of + 2,5 ° C).
The easiest way to get to Tashkent is, of course, by air. The airport "Tashkent South" is a major airline hub of the country. In the city you can travel by bus, taxi and subway. All 29 local subway stations have their own unique architectural look created with habitual to Tashkent marble and granite, rows of columns and bas-reliefs.
The local cuisine should be tried in the old town. Most of fragrant tea houses and cafes are concentrated between Kukeldash Madrassah and Chorsu bazaar. Here you can taste genuine Uzbek kebabs, shawarma, hot samsa. Look also at the Yunus-Abad tennis courts, where you can visit a huge "Osh Markazi" - pilaf center.
As elsewhere in the East, there are many markets and bazaars in Tashkent, the oldest and the biggest are Eski Juva and Chorsu market. Here you will feel the atmosphere of the flavor of spices mixed with notes of oriental sweets and aroma of sweetest ripe fruit. Finally, it is worth to look at Alay bazaar, where you can find everything - from fruits and vegetables to clothes and gold.
There is a great number of tourism attractions and entertainment sites in Tashkent. The heart of Tashkent is Amir Timur Square, surrounded by Timurids museum, Forums Palace, 19th Century Law Institute and a symbol of the city - Tashkent Chimes. Hast Imam Square - a religious center of Tashkent with the main madrassahs and mosques of the country, such as Barak-Khan's 16th century madrassah, Tilla-Sheikh mosque, Mausoleum of St. Abu Bakr Shashi Kaffal and Islamic Institute of Imam al-Bukhari. Other survived monuments also worth seeing are Sheikhantaur ensemble (consisting of three mausoleums - Yunus Khan, Sheyhantura and Kaldirgach-Biya), mausoleums Zainutdin Bobo and Sufi-Ota. You should also visit these places of worship that remained active madrasah Kukeldash and Abdul Kasim-Eshon, Mosques Jami, Mirza Yusuf, Hayrabat-Eshon.
There are many museums in Tashkent, including the National Art Museum, the new museum of Amir Temur, Museum of History of Uzbekistan, Museum of Applied Art and Literature Museum. Noteworthy is the world famous Opera and Ballet Theatre with beautiful square in front of it.
