Tall Tien Shan spruces grow along the gorge and the high meadows are often used by nomads as pastures for their livestock in the summer. Shamsi Pass (3,500 m) crowns the gorge and connects both the Chui and Kochkor Valleys.
The Shamsi Gorge has an interesting backstory to its name. According to legend, someone once found a mask made of pure gold in the gorge. When the person consulted the local elders, they claimed it once belonged to queen named Shamsi, and hence the gorge was named.
As far as wildlife, the gorge is home to animals such as the Turkestan Lynx, weasels, hares, and martens.
