It contains Kyrgyzstan’s 3rd largest lake, Lake Sary Chelek, as well as walnut forests, apple and pear orchards, and breathtaking mountain landscapes.
Lake Sary Chelek is the focal point of the reserve and is the most visited feature in the area. It stretches out over 5 square kilometers and is 246 meters at its deepest point. Its name actually means “yellow bowl.” In autumn, the vibrant yellow and burnt orange leaves reflect off the water to create a golden glow emanating from its surface.
Besides Lake Sary Chelek, there are 6 other lakes in the reserve and numerous rivers. Temperatures in the reserve aren’t prone to extreme swings. Summers are pleasant and the winter brings little snow. Wildlife in the reserve includes 157 bird species, various deer, ibex, wild boars and porcupines.
