One of the most important cities of ancient Silk Road are located in Uzbekistan: Bukhara, Khiva, and Samarkand. Although, there is something special about Samarkand. Samarkand city is godsend to anyone who’s interested in the greatest trade web. The second, after Tashkent, biggest city of Uzbekistan is as old as Babylon.
There is a classic, beautiful legend behind the name of the city. A princess, whose name was Kant, fell in love with poor man, named Samar. Princess’ father didn’t only prohibit lovebirds to get married, he killed Samar. Kant couldn’t get over her lover’s death, and jumped off the castle. The people named the city after two lovers.
Ancient historians called Samarkand “Rome of the East”, or “The Pearl of the Eastern Muslim World”. The history of Samarkand is 2,750 years old. The city is a raging mix of Indian, Mongolian, and Iranian cultures, with little bits of Western and Eastern influences. Samarkand went through conquests of the Arabs, Alexander the Great, Genghis-Khan, and Tamerlan.
One of the oldest city in the world is located in a large oasis near Zerafshan river. There are many factors of Samarkand becoming one of the biggest commercial centers of the Great Silk Road; comfortable climate, alongside with favorable geographical location, and large number of natural springs. The Great Timur or Tamerlan wanted to create the most mesmerizing capital in the word. Tamerlan’s rule is called Golden Age of Samarkand. Rome of the East was also city of scholars and science. Tamerlan’s grandson Ulugh Beg came up with one of the most progressive educational systems at that time.
