Kyrgyzstan’s Lake Mertzbacher rests at an elevation of 3304 meters and twice a year completely empties into the Inilchek River to be replenished later by glacial runoff.
In actuality, the lake itself is separated into two different pools called the Upper and Lower Lakes. The Lower Lake is in fact 400 meters lower than the Upper Lake and held together by walls of ice that periodically melt and drain into the valley below. The Upper Lake has no such feature and remains full year round. Lake Mertzbacher is the only lake in Kyrgyzstan silk road that “disappears” in this eccentric manner.
