There are almost 150 historical and architectural monuments in the city-museum of Bukhara, reflecting its history of over 15 centuries. Among them there are more than 20 mosques and 30 religious schools (madrassas) and mausoleums, caravanserais, khanakas etc. One of the brightest attractions of historical city center – are covered shopping street corners.
The most ancient monument of Bukhara is a fortress-citadel Ark, the construction of which refers to the feudal period of V-VII centuries. From the era of Samanids (IX-X centuries.) has reached nowadays the mausoleum of Ismail Samani - one of the classic works of Central Asian architecture. During the heyday of monumental architecture (XII c.) in the center of Bukhara appeared remarkable ensemble of square Poi-Kalyan with old mosque (rebuilt at the beginning of the XVI century) and giant minaret Kalyan, billowing skyward for more than 45 m and having a diameter of base of almost 10 m. Today it serves as an observation deck for viewing the city. Among the outstanding monuments of the same period are Magoki-Attari and Namazga mosques. A little later were constructed such famous monuments as Buyan Kulihana mausoleum (XIV c.) and Ulugbek madrasah (XV cent.).
