Fergana

Fergana - a small beautiful town in the south-east of the country, the largest in the valley of the same name. It is distinguished by the colonial era buildings of the Russian Empire with a clear layout and a pronounced center. Fergana isn’t very old town and there are no such beautiful medieval buildings, as in Kokand.

Bazaar of Fergana is worth to visit just like any Eastern market. It is not too crowded and pretty clean. It offers a wide choice of all kinds of cakes, nuts, dried fruits and sweets as well as lamb, fish and cooking utensils.

The population of Fergana are Muslims and therefore the daily regime is usually adjusted to the time of prayer. This implies an early dawn rise about 5 a.m. But in the evening the streets become empty and dark as the street lighting system here is poor.

Fergana town is planned like a wheel: the axis is a fortress from which like spokes run the streets. During the Tzar reign time in Fergana was built a number of official institutions: the military headquarters, the governor's residence, post office and the city treasury, the officers' club, high school and college. Then came the city garden, the theater, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. All of these colonial buildings are from the late 19th century and are the most interesting architectural heritage of the city.
