Want to experience authentic atmosphere of an ancient city? The city with a thousand years of history, that was preserved and is still mesmerizing. Bukhara city is one of the oldest Central Asian cities. Bukhara history goes back to 6th century BC. The city is more than 2,500 years old. When the Silk Road was a strong network of multiple roads that gradually spread out connecting the East and the West, Bukhara was called “Shining Pearl of the Silk Road”.
Shinning Pearl and the fifth-largest city in Uzbekistan was a famous, prosperous trade center of the Silk Road. Caravans from all over the world flock to Bukhara, attracted by legends about magnificence and beauty of the city. Bukhara has not only been a center of trade, since the golden age of Samanid Empire, it has been one of the holiest cities in Central Asia. Large intellectual and historic center of the Islamic world was also a center of civilization, religion, and education.
The city is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many mosques and madrassas with unique architectural style of Central Asia. Bukhara is divided in 2 parts: Old Town and New Town. Historical buildings are architectural preserve, that’s why the new center was located outside the antique city. Since government is concerned with maintaining historical heritage of Bukhara, many monuments and buildings were restored. Bukhara hasn’t changed a lot.
Travels to Bukhara are fascinating, because there’s so much to see. Po-i-Kalyan is the biggest tourist attraction in Uzbekistan. The complex consists of: Kalyan Minaret, Kalyan Mosque and Mir-i Arab Madrasah. The beauty of the complex is so breath-taking, that Genghis-khan, after subduing the city, didn’t destroy it. In the heart of Bukhara there are remnants of the old trading domes with products of local masters being sold. A traveler is still able to sense atmosphere of city with rich history, as if hundreds of caravans still flock to Bukhara. This city is one of the highlights of a travel around Uzbekistan.
