The mountains in the pass have very few trees and look so smooth that they seem like large piles of pale green sand. The only sign of foliage you might see is along the river banks. In the winter, Ala Bell Pass is buried in unbelievable amounts of snow, making it look more like a stark, white desert. In the spring, you can see blooming alpine meadows from the pass and the Chychkan River as it flows adjacent to the road.
There are several yurt camps located close to the road the winds through the pass where you can see herds of horses lounging nearby.
