It is bordered by Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. It has the access to the Caspian Sea in the east. Azerbaijan has an area 86,600 sq km, and a population of more than 9 million. The capital and the largest city is Baku. The official currency of Azerbaijan is the manat.
According to the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the entry to the country is regulated by visa regime. The citizens of Russia and the CIS countries enjoy a visa-free regime. The other foreign naturals are requested to obtain a visa.
The climate in Azerbaijan is very diverse. There are 9 of the 11 existing climatic zones – from temperate to subtropical. Maximum summer temperatures can reach + 45°C, and in some mountain areas can bottom out at around – 40°C. The best time for traveling across the country is from April to November.
Azerbaijan can offer its guests a great variety of activities: tours of the amazing historical sites – Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Baku, Shaki, Gakh, Guba, Yardimli; relaxing holidays on the beaches of the Caspian Sea; medical tours and vacation at the thermal waters – Masalli, Gusar, Naftalan, Baku, Ganja. Also in Azerbaijan you will find more than 130 different museums, theaters, mausoleums, mosques, fortresses, visit Baku and other unique cultural sites.
In Azerbaijan, there are two sites included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO: Gobustan National Preserve – a unique accumulation of rock paintings some of which are more than 10 thousand years, that has been united into one historical-artistic preserve and that is located on an area of over 100 km2; and Icheri Sheher – the historical core of Baku and Historical and Architectural Reserve surrounded by well-preserved walls. This is the most ancient part of the city and its most important attraction. The reserve is located on an area of 221 thousand m2. There you can find the Old City of Baku, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower.
Azerbaijan is a country of unique natural contrasts: there are 9 of the 11 major climatic zones – from subtropical to alpine meadows. Here, at the same time you can meet all four seasons. Humid subtropical lush vegetation is adjacent to the eternal snows and glaciers of Shakhdag and Murovdag; green forests of Gabala are adjacent to sultry Mil, Mugan, Shirvan steppes; fog and rains over tea and citrus plantations at the foothills of the Talysh Ridge are neighboring with coolness of the Absheron Peninsula.
You certainly will not be able to visit all the attractions of Azerbaijan for one vacation. Which is good, because in this case, you will have a reason to come here again.
