Kyrgyzstan has a great cultural potential for every curious traveler to discover. It is a unique blend of nomadic culture, architectural and cultural heritage of the Great Silk Route.
Nomad culture in modern Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz people were historically nomads, who had been moving from place to place by their horses and carts and lived in felt round dwellings. That was uneasy nomadic camp life with constant struggle with nature’s vicissitudes and alien invaders. In the present Kyrgyz life you can observe and experience a slight trace of nomadic life. Some Kyrgyz families in rural areas move to the high mountain pastures in summer time. They live there in yurts and graze their cattle. During your cultural tours you will have an opportunity to visit yurt camps, to overnight there, to eat national Kyrgyz food, to drink fresh mare’s milk or fermented Kumys.
Horse as a part of Kyrgyz culture. As Kyrgyz people are historically associated with horses, you will see them everywhere in the country. Moreover you will have a chance to go on a horseback ride along the picturesque gorges or sunny emerald lakeshores. Another great opportunity to watch the horses is to visit Kyrgyz national horseback games. During your cultural tour you can visit a popular festival of horse games such as Ulak Tartysh, Kyz Kuumai, Tyiyn Enmei, At Chabysh.
Eagle hunt show. Hunting is another Kyrgyz nomadic tradition since ancient times. We include in our culture programs a visit to “Munushkor” – a person practicing falconry. You will see an impressive scene of hunting with eagle or falcon after hare. This majestic huge bird is able to beat in a tough fight, even a fox or a wolf. This type of hunting is the most common form of recreation for nomads and today it is a part of Kyrgyz national culture.
Secrets of felt production.Your acquaintance with Kyrgyz nomadic culture will continue during the master classes of felt production. From ancient times Kyrgyz people made woolen felt for further production of coverings for yurts, some simple household utensils, clothing, home furnishings, pastoral equipment. Nowadays felt products are widely used by modern Kyrgyz people and become more and more popular among foreigners. During the master classes skilled workers will show you the technique of felt production and further manufacturing of different felt products, bright beautiful carpets Shyrdak and Ala-Kiyiz, felt clothes, yurt coverings etc.
A chance to enjoy nice melodies. Within your cultural tour you will also visit a show of Kyrgyz national folklore music. The show is performed by folklore group “Azem”, established in 2002 by Karakol town music school. You will hear plays of both instrumental and vocal works performed by ancient musical instruments.
Witness Great Silk Route on Kyrgyz land. The modern territory of Kyrgyzstan was an important site of ancient caravan track. There were two branches of the Silk Road, one in the Northern region along the Lake Issyk-Kul, Talas and Chui valleys, and the second in the South - through the current land of Naryn and Osh oblasts. The Great Silk Route has left a rich historical and cultural heritage to modern Kyrgyzstan as along the Great Silk Route were carried not only goods, but also ideologies, religions, arts and technologies, contributing to mutual cultural enrichment not only of East and West people, but also the locals.
Many Silk Route monuments have survived up to the modern times, the most significant of which are: the ancient city of Osh, which is more than 3000 years old; city Nevaket (dated 5-6 centuries) and Suyab (6-7 centuries); such monuments of Karakhanids period (10-12 centuries): Burana Tower, Uzgen architectural complex; mausoleum of Shah-Fazil, the city Balasagyn; Gumbez (burial) of legendary Kyrgyz folk hero Manas (14 century); Caravanserai Tash-Rabat (15 century). Three of the mentioned places are UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kyrgyzstan. During your cultural tours you will have a great opportunity to visit all these sites for a breathtaking discovery of the great silk Route!
Other outstanding cultural sites and places of interest. During your culture tour in Kyrgyzstan you will also visit beautiful Moslem mosques and unforgettable Russian Orthodox churches, various regional historical museums which expositions reflect the history of the region, its natural resources, industrial development, agriculture, culture, education, health and tells about famous people of the region. You will surely enjoy an open air petroglyph museum said to contain drawings that date from 500 BC–100 AD and depict wolves, long-horned ibex, goats, horses, snow leopards, sacrifices, some hunting scenes and you will be impressed by Scythian burial mounds – the traces of an open air temple leaved here by Usun and Scythian tribes, who settled at the Issyk Kul basin from IX-VIII BC till III-IV AC.
The discovery of Kyrgyz land - is an unforgettable journey and exotic adventure. We invite you to travel to Kyrgyzstan and enjoy here not only the wonderful, delightful and charming mountains and crystal clear lakes, but also our rich cultural heritage traced from nomad times and the Great Silk Route epoch!
