Acquaintance with China you can start from Beijing. First you will visit here City Center - Tiananmen Square. Until the middle of last century it was the largest square in the world, next to this square is located Grand National Opera Theatre and the House of People. In Beijing northern part there are Tiananmen gate, behind which lies the Forbidden City. The city was built in the 15th century. Its unusual name came from the fact that in the days of empire foreigners were limited to the entrance of this palace complex. According to the legend, palace has 9999 rooms. The town is surrounded by a wall and a moat around the perimeter for safety purposes. Locals call this artificial reservoir "Golden water". Another famous attraction of Beijing is Great Wall of China, which is associated with many mysteries and legends. It is believed that it was built to protect China from enemy attacks and is a unique building that has historical value. In Beijing, you can also visit the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace Badaling, Ming Tombs etc.
Another outstanding city that you will visit is Urumqi, a capital and the main industrial city in the region. Since ancient times this area was inhabited by different ethnic groups and even races. All those tribes and their state formations had different cultures, professed different religions and had left a unique heritage, which remains can be seen in Urumqi. Generally, Urumqi is a typical Chinese city with only about 10 percent of ethnic minorities in it. The local international market, which is also called the Grand Bazaar or Erdaotsyao Market is especially busy in summer evenings. And you can always find here a great selection of local and regional products. Close to Grand Bazaar on Shengli Street there is a Silk Road Museum. Here you can learn much about the ancient Silk Road and many interesting facts about region history. Another museum called Museum of Urumqi is located on Nanhunan street. Best historical museum here is the Museum of Xinjiang with free entrance. This museum is famous for ancient mummies of Caucasians and their belongings. These people had supposedly lived in this region 1500 - 4000 years ago. Museum also presents examples of silk and ancient inscriptions in different languages, as well as many other artifacts from different eras and nations.
On the western Xinjiang border there is a city of Kashgar, which once was one of the most famous trading centers in the world. Throughout its 2,000-year history, the city served as the meeting place of East and West, because the ancient Silk Road had passed through Kashgar. In modern Kashgar still reigns the spirit of Middle Ages: the old town with narrow winding streets is one of the main local attractions. Though the Silk Road lost its importance in Qing era, trade continues to flourish in the city. Every week here is arranged a grandiose Sunday market, which brings together thousands of merchants from the neighboring suburbs, as well as from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The old town is also full of shops and stores. There is a huge number of craft workshops located on Masters Street, extending from the Id Kah Square, where there is an Etigart Mosque - the largest mosque in China. In Kashgar neighborhood has survived another attraction - the mausoleum of Khoja Abajo, where buried 72 members of Kashgar ruling family. Among those was buried imperial concubine Iparhan, legendary Uighur beauty, captured by Qing army and sent to the harem of Qianlong ruler.
