Tent Camping in Kyrgyzstan: Everything You Need to Know
How should I build a yurt from scratch in Kyrgyzstan? Learn where you’ll be camping, what you should bring, and what’s provided for you on your tour.
One of the best ways to experience the pristine wilderness of Kyrgyzstan is by camping in it! Yurts camping in Kyrgyzstan gives you a front row seat to the country’s unbelievably starry skies and the untainted sounds of nature. Whether you’re staying at a base camp or next to a remote alpine lake with no one around, it’s an experience that you’ll never forget!
Silk Road Explore tours offer tent camping to travelers in a variety of ways. Some tours include just a day or two of camping mixed with hotel/guest house accommodations or yurt stays. Other tours include tent camping almost every night. It just depends on the nature of the tour you choose.
WHAT KIND OF CAMPING ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?
Camping in Kyrgyzstan can range from setting up tents in a remote gorge to staying in a larger base camp near the foot of a mountain. There are 2 major base camps that travelers may stay at during their tour of Kyrgyzstan: Achyk Tash Base Camp and Karkara Base Camp.
ACHYK TASH BASE CAMP
Achyk Tash Base Camp is located at the base of Peak Lenin in the province of Osh. It’s open from late June to the beginning of September and offers a number of conveniences to travelers. First of all, the base camp contains hanger-style tents with room for 2 people a piece. It also has a bar, mountaineering shop, refueling station, and dining yurt.
KARKARA BASE CAMP
Karkara Base Camp is located near the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border in a beautiful gorge in the Central Tien Shan Mountains. The base camp can accommodate a maximum of 60 people. Tents contain 2 twin beds a piece and also offer electricity. Other facilities include a dining yurt, bar, mountain bike rental shop, shower, and Russian bath house.
All other tent camping in Kyrgyzstan will likely be in the middle of nature with little to no signs of civilization nearby. That may mean camping in the middle of a gorge, valley, mountainside, or next to a river or alpine lake.
IS CAMPING EQUIPMENT PROVIDED DURING TOURS?
Tents, cooking equipment, and meals are provided for almost every tour that involves tent camping. However, to make sure, always check the details of each tour. Travelers may be asked to provide an individual sleeping bag appropriate for cold temperatures.
ARE YOU READY?
As you prepare for camping during your tour, just remember to bring plenty of warm clothing and shoes. Camping season in Kyrgyzstan is between the end of May and mid-September, but don’t let the summer months fool you! Camping in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan is guaranteed to be cold no matter what the season. Just come prepared for nighttime alpine temperatures and you’re sure to have a spectacular time!
